In 1952, in the lead up to the coronation of The Queen, unemployed teacher John Standing (Rhys) comes face-to-face with a man who looks uncannily like him, Johnny Spence (also Rhys). As a result of a drunken night, Standing finds himself living out his doppelg?nger's life and the troubles that come with it including his two mistresses, a drug addict mother, a failed business and a deteriorating manor. Despite this, he grows close to his new family and begins to have a positive impact on the household when Spence shows up with bad intentions.
