After suffering a mild heart attack, Abbie decides to resume contact with his long-estranged father Abe (Alan King), known in Hollywood as 'King of the Extras'. Abbie's efforts at reconciliation meet with an ambivalent reception from his father, who is allergic to any form of responsibility or commitment, and prefers to remain the 'face in the crowd' that his job requires. But Abbie is more similar to his father than he'll admit, particularly when it comes to his non-commital relationship with long-suffering girlfriend Lisa (JoBeth Williams), and as the two men banter and rail against one another, they begin to grow close despite themselves.
