The year is 2006 in the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan. The country was the last country on Earth to allow internet and television, and now the king has decided to step down so that his people can find their place in the modern world. The biggest change is ahead: the transition to democracy. The authorities are holding shadow elections to teach citizens how to vote. However, the local population, for whom Buddhism is a way of life and who value tradition much more than politics, is very skeptical about the need for change. The authorities receive a tip that the village lama is planning a ritual for voting day that involves a rifle from the American Civil War. The film was Bhutan's Oscar nominee in 2024. The debut film School on the Edge of the World by director, screenwriter and producer PawoChoyningDorji was also screened in Finland, and was nominated for Best International Feature Film at the 2022 Oscars.
