Richard Gere plays the eponymous Mr Jones, who finds himself in a mental hospital after threatening to throw himself off the building where he is working as a carpenter. Once inside the hospital his past is investigated by Dr Libbie Bowen (Lena Olin) and he is diagnosed as a manic depressive. Jones' treatment continues and eventually client and psychiatrist become lovers, but Jones is not yet cured and their relationship proves difficult to sustain.
