Directed by Richard Attenborough and based on Cornelius Ryans book, A Bridge Too Far recreates Operation Market Garden, the ambitious Allied airborne offensive launched in the Netherlands in September 1944. Its large ensemble cast includes Sean Connery, Michael Caine, Gene Hackman and Robert Redford as commanders and soldiers caught in an operation whose objectives increasingly exceed what the troops on the ground can achieve. The film combines large-scale battle scenes with military strategy, command decisions and the mounting human cost of the failed campaign.
