Directed by Stanley Kubrick and based on Anthony Burgesss book, A Clockwork Orange stars Malcolm McDowell as Alex, the teenage leader of a violent gang in a dystopian near-future Britain. After being imprisoned, Alex undergoes an experimental programme designed to condition him against violence, turning him into a test case in a wider struggle over free will, punishment and state control. Kubricks film combines dystopian science fiction, social satire and psychological drama with an intensely stylised portrayal of violence and institutional power.
