American Beauty is a darkly comic drama about suburban disillusionment, desire, and the pursuit of happiness behind a perfect American façade. The film follows a middle-aged mans existential crisis as the lives around him unravel in unexpected ways. Directed by Sam Mendes, the film won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and is regarded as one of the defining American films of the late 1990s.
