All three episodes of the drama based on the novel by Angus Wilson. Professor Gerald Middleton (Richard Johnson/Douglas Hodge) feels like a failure, both personally and professionally. His marriage is over, he is estranged from his three children and he has lost Dollie (Dorothy Tutin/Tara Fitzgerald), the woman he has always loved. Dollie was engaged to Gerald's best friend Gilbert (Daniel Craig), who died in the First World War, and whose ghost continues to haunt Gerald. Was the archaeological idol they discovered all those years ago a hoax after all?
