Directed by John Carpenter and co-written with Dan OBannon, Dark Star follows the exhausted crew of a deep-space scout ship twenty years into a mission to destroy unstable planets ahead of future colonisation. As boredom, faulty equipment and an increasingly troublesome alien complicate life aboard the ship, a malfunctioning intelligent bomb creates an even greater threat. Carpenters feature debut combines low-budget science fiction with absurd comedy and a deliberately mundane view of life in deep space.
