Directed by Philip Kaufman and based on Jack Finneys book The Body Snatchers, this 1978 adaptation stars Donald Sutherland as a San Francisco health inspector who discovers that people across the city are being replaced by emotionless duplicates. Brooke Adams, Leonard Nimoy and Jeff Goldblum co-star as the invasion spreads and paranoia turns everyday urban life into a source of fear. The film reworks the 1956 classic for a darker, more unsettling late-1970s setting.

Remakes of great films are usually on a hiding to nothing, but Philip Kaufmans brilliant update of the 1956 classic is a rare and memorable exception. Transposing the action to the heart of San Francisco allows Kaufman to retain all the suspense of Jack Finneys original story while adding caustic social commentary about the selfishness of the 1970s me generation that remains all too relevant today.

But its a paranoid thriller first and foremost, based on one of the most psychologically terrifying of all premises - what happens when you can no longer trust not just the authorities but even your nearest and dearest?
