31 oktober, 1977. Johnny Carsons rival Jack Delroy leder talk-showen "Night Owls", som har varit ett troget sällskap för sömnlösa tv-tittare. Ett år efter Jacks frus tragiska bortgång har tittarsiffrorna rasat. I ett desperat försök att vända lyckan planerar Jack en unik Halloweenspecial, omedveten om att han är i färd med att frigöra ondskan rakt in i Amerikas vardagsrum.
