Maniac (1963), directed by Michael Carreras for Hammer Films and written by Jimmy Sangster, follows an American artist traveling in France who becomes entangled with a family hiding dark secrets connected to a psychiatric institution. The film blends psychological tension with crime elements as relationships and motives become increasingly unstable. The production reflects Hammers early-1960s interest in psychological suspense outside its gothic horror cycle.
