Marcel Carnés Port of Shadows (1938), starring Jean Gabin and Michèle Morgan, is a cornerstone of French poetic realism and a precursor to film noir. The story follows a deserter who arrives in the fog-shrouded port of Le Havre, where he falls in love with a young woman entangled in a violent underworld. With its fatalistic mood, shadowy visuals, and themes of doomed love, it stands as a landmark of French cinema and an early influence on Hollywood noir.
