Directed by Josef von Sternberg and starring Marlene Dietrich, Clive Brook and Anna May Wong, Shanghai Express follows a group of passengers travelling from Peking to Shanghai during the Chinese Civil War. Dietrichs Shanghai Lily is unexpectedly reunited with former lover Donald Harvey before the train becomes caught up in revolutionary violence. The film won the Academy Award for Best Cinematography.
