Directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Whoopi Goldberg, Danny Glover and Oprah Winfrey, The Color Purple follows the life of Celie, an African American woman in the American South whose journey spans abuse, separation and personal empowerment across several decades of the 20th century. Combining emotional character drama, historical storytelling and social commentary, the film explores racism, sexism, family trauma and resilience through Spielbergs adaptation of Alice Walkers Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. The story became one of the defining American dramas of the 1980s and earned multiple Academy Award nominations.
