Directed by Richard Lester, The Knack ...and How to Get It (1965) is a British comedy following a shy schoolteacher who becomes entangled in the chaotic romantic pursuits of his confident roommate in swinging 1960s London. Starring Rita Tushingham and Michael Crawford, the film blends satire, youthful energy and experimental visual style in its portrayal of sex, identity and modern relationships. The film won the Palme dOr at the Cannes Film Festival and became associated with the British New Wave and 1960s counterculture cinema. Combining social comedy with coming-of-age elements, it remains one of Richard Lesters defining films.
