Laurence Dunmores The Libertine (2004), starring Johnny Depp as the scandalous 17th-century poet John Wilmot, Earl of Rochester, is a dark historical drama about excess, wit, and self-destruction at the court of King Charles II. Co-starring Samantha Morton and John Malkovich, it blends period detail with a portrait of genius undone by vice.
