Directed by William A. Wellman and starring James Cagney, Jean Harlow and Edward Woods, The Public Enemy follows Tom Powers as he rises from street crime to a powerful position in Chicagos Prohibition-era underworld. His involvement in bootlegging, gang rivalry and escalating violence leads to an increasingly destructive confrontation with rival criminals. The film became one of the defining early Hollywood gangster films and helped establish James Cagney as a major star.
