Based on Aneko Yusagis light novel series, The Rising of the Shield Hero follows university student Naofumi Iwatani after he is summoned to another world as one of four Cardinal Heroes destined to defend it from destructive Waves of Catastrophe. Betrayed and stripped of his reputation shortly after arriving, the Shield Hero builds a new group around the demi-human swordswoman Raphtalia and begins earning the trust of people beyond the kingdom that rejected him. Produced primarily by Kinema Citrus, the anime combines isekai fantasy, party-based battles and journeys through multiple kingdoms and parallel worlds.
