Directed by Akira Kurosawa, Throne of Blood (1957) stars Toshiro Mifune in a samurai-era adaptation of William Shakespeares Macbeth. Set in feudal Japan, the film follows a warrior whose ambition is manipulated by prophecy and his wifes influence. Kurosawas film is widely regarded as one of the most notable cinematic interpretations of Shakespeare.

Starring the irrepressible Toshiro Mifune as the doomed warlord Washizu and a wonderfully creepy turn by Isuzu Yamadaas the Lady Macbeth-inspired Asaji, the film shows Kurosawas familiar mastery of atmosphere and action combined with the savagery of war.
