Directed by Emir Kusturica, Underground (1995) is a Balkan war satire that follows two friends through decades of political upheaval in Yugoslavia from World War II to the Yugoslav Wars. Combining black comedy, surrealism and historical drama, the film became one of Kusturicas most internationally recognized works. Underground won the Palme dOr at the Cannes Film Festival.
