The film follows his attempt to clear his name while moving through police pressure, old criminal connections and shifting loyalties. Built around a frame-up plot and noir crime atmosphere, the story combines underworld ties with a fugitive structure.

Reformed Chicago mobster Tony Reagan (Brady) is framed for the murder of his former boss, Big Jim, the uncle of his fiancée, Sally (Hart). Forced to go on the run, he seeks to clear his name with the help of an old friend (Bennett).

Featuring supporting turns from John Russell (Rio Bravo) and Peggy Dow (Harvey), and an early appearance from Rock Hudson, Undertow is a superior film noir.
