Directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Christian Bale and John Malkovich, Empire of the Sun follows a young British boy separated from his parents during the Japanese invasion of Shanghai in World War II. Combining war drama, coming-of-age storytelling and historical survival, the film explores loss of innocence, resilience and survival inside wartime prison camps during the collapse of colonial Shanghai. Spielbergs adaptation blends large-scale historical spectacle with emotional character drama through one of the directors most visually ambitious historical films.
