With an unflinching gaze, Frida Kahlo faces viewers in dozens of self-portraits that reveal a complex individual through layered symbolism. Drawing upon motifs in Mexican culture, Aztec mythology, and Catholic iconography, Kahlo made use of traditional interpretations to heighten and contrast her own connection to each element. The result is a kaleidoscopic illustration of her feelings on everything from her intimate experiences with chronic pain and tumultuous relationships to her broader views on identity, culture, resistance, and creativity—the intense reality of her life.
