Torment (1944)
Written by Ingmar Bergman and directed by Alf Sjöberg, Torment follows a strict boarding school student tormented by a sadistic Latin teacher known as Caligula. The film shocked Swedish audiences and marked Bergmans breakthrough as a screenwriter with its raw depiction of authority, cruelty and moral hypocrisy.

It introduces the themes of inner conflict and existential longing that would define Bergmans later work.

As he forms a bond with a young working-class woman, the film explores themes of disability, dignity, class and love. Directed by Bergman, it is an early example of his sensitive approach to human suffering and emotional resilience.
