During the years she experiences more than a fair share of cruelty and misfortune, but also friendship and romance, in situations and locations closely resembling those the author herself is known to have experienced in her youth.

We include a section on Charlotte Bronte''s life and background, including select chapters from the biography written by her close friend Elizabeth Gaskell after her death, originally published in 1857.
