Combining murder mystery, psychological tension and exploitation-infused Italian thriller elements, the film centers on corruption, sexual obsession and escalating violence within an upper-class urban environment. The film blends giallo-inspired suspense with the darker tone associated with 1970s European crime thrillers.

Co-written by long-time Federico Fellini collaborator Bernadino Zapponi (who also co-wrote Dario Argentos Deep Red), and incorporating a specially produced erotic animation by Francesco Maurizio Guido aka Gibba (best-known for his comic cartoon King Dick), Plot of Fear is a disturbing and engrossing giallo.
