Directed by Sam Mendes, 1917 stars George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman as two young British soldiers sent across the Western Front to deliver an urgent message that could prevent a battalion from walking into a German trap. Inspired by stories told to Mendes by his grandfather, a World War I veteran, the film follows their mission through trenches, ruined villages and enemy territory. 1917 won the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture Drama and Best Director, while BAFTA awarded it Best Film and Best Director; it also won three Academy Awards, including Best Cinematography for Roger Deakins.
