Directed by Stanley Kubrick, 2001: A Space Odyssey stars Keir Dullea and Gary Lockwood in a landmark science-fiction film about human evolution, space exploration, artificial intelligence and the mysterious monoliths. Arthur C. Clarke co-wrote the screenplay with Kubrick, developing the story alongside his book 2001: A Space Odyssey. The film won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects and remains closely associated with HAL 9000, space travel and philosophical hard sci-fi.
