Black Caesar (1973)
Directed by Larry Cohen and starring Fred Williamson, Black Caesar follows Tommy Gibbs from a brutal childhood in Harlem to his rise as the head of a criminal empire. After taking on the syndicate that once controlled his neighbourhood, Tommys pursuit of power becomes increasingly tied to revenge against the corrupt racist policeman who scarred him as a boy. Featuring a soundtrack by James Brown, the film became a defining title of 1970s blaxploitation cinema and was followed the same year by Hell Up in Harlem.

>b>Hell Up in Harlem
Directed by Larry Cohen, Hell Up in Harlem continues the story of Tommy Gibbs, with Fred Williamson returning as the Harlem crime boss after the events of Black Caesar. As Tommy rebuilds his criminal empire, his war against a corrupt district attorney and rival gangsters escalates into assassinations, betrayal and a personal campaign of revenge. The film pushes its predecessor further toward violent action while retaining its blaxploitation gangster setting and themes of corruption and racial power.
