District 9 is a 2009 science fiction film directed by Neill Blomkamp and starring Sharlto Copley in his breakout role. Set in Johannesburg, the film depicts extraterrestrial refugees confined to a militarized slum, using science fiction to explore themes of segregation, power, and xenophobia. Blending action, satire, and social commentary, the film presents a raw, documentary-style vision of alien contact gone wrong. District 9 received widespread critical acclaim and was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
