François Ozons Frantz (2016) is a tender and haunting post World War I drama about grief, guilt, and reconciliation. When a mysterious Frenchman visits the grave of a fallen German soldier, his encounter with the soldiers fiancée unveils buried secrets and emotional wounds on both sides. Shot in luminous black and white, this poetic film reimagines Ernst Lubitschs Broken Lullaby for a modern audience.
