French drama co-written and directed by Patrice Chéreau. Margot (Isabelle Adjani), the Catholic sister of King Charles IX of France (Jean-Hugues Anglade), is forced to marry the Protestant Henri de Naverre (Daniel Auteuil) in order to reconcile her divided country. However, the brutal murder of thousands of Protestants during the St. Bartholomew's Day celebrations throws the fragile peace into chaos and, when a wounded Protestant soldier seeks refuge with Marguerite, she finds herself falling in love. However, she is in danger due to the schemes of Catherine de' Medici (Virna Lisi), who hungers for power.
