Directed by Richard Benjamin, Mermaids stars Cher as an unconventional single mother who moves with her two daughters to a small Massachusetts town in the early 1960s. Winona Ryder plays her teenage daughter Charlotte, whose religious obsessions, romantic awakening and difficult relationship with her mother shape much of the story. Based on Patty Danns book, the film mixes family conflict, coming-of-age and comedy with Bob Hoskins and Christina Ricci in supporting roles.
