In Sakuran (2006), a rebellious young woman is sold into the pleasure quarters of Edo-era Japan, where she must navigate power, desire, and survival within the rigid world of high-ranking courtesans. Directed by Mika Ninagawa, the film blends historical setting with striking, dreamlike visuals to explore identity, exploitation, and female autonomy in a highly stylized environment.
