Directed by Kim Ki-duk, The Isle stars Suh Jung as Hee-jin, the mute keeper of an isolated fishing resort, and Kim Yu-seok as Hyun-shik, a fugitive whose arrival leads to an increasingly obsessive and destructive relationship. The film is noted for its sparse dialogue, disturbing imagery and graphic scenes involving self-harm and fish hooks. The Isle competed for the Golden Lion at the 2000 Venice Film Festival, where Kim Ki-duk received a NETPAC Special Mention.
