Directed by Wojciech Jerzy Has and based on Jan Potockis classic book, The Saragossa Manuscript follows officer Alfonse van Worden through the Sierra Morena, where encounters with mysterious women, hermits, nobles and storytellers unfold into an intricate maze of stories within stories. Zbigniew Cybulski leads this Polish fantasy filled with supernatural encounters, gothic imagery, shifting realities and increasingly elaborate narrative layers. The film became an established cult favourite on the international midnight-movie circuit and was admired by filmmakers including Luis Buñuel and Martin Scorsese.
