Directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, Fargo (1996) follows a car salesman who hires two criminals to kidnap his wife in order to extort ransom money from her wealthy father. The plan quickly spirals out of control, drawing the attention of a pregnant police chief investigating a series of violent crimes in rural Minnesota. Frances McDormand won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance.
