Directed by Sydney Pollack, Jeremiah Johnson stars Robert Redford as a former soldier who leaves civilization behind to live as a mountain man in the Rocky Mountains. Based partly on the legend of John Liver-Eating Johnson and related mountain-man literature, the film blends survival drama with western frontier themes. Its story focuses on isolation, conflict with nature and the harsh consequences of life beyond settled society.
