Directed by Gareth Edwards, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) is set shortly before the events of A New Hope and follows a group of rebels tasked with stealing the plans for the Death Star. Led by Jyn Erso, the mission brings together soldiers, spies and defectors in a direct confrontation with the Galactic Empire. The film connects directly to the larger Star Wars saga while focusing on a self-contained wartime operation within the rebellion.
