Bicycles have been synonymous with exploration, independence, progress, and hope since the late 1890s. They rose in popularity with the introduction of the safety bicycle, which made them safer, easier to ride, and more appealing—especially to women. This biking boom coincided with the rise of lithography and illustrated posters, allowing artists the chance to experiment with playful typography and eye-catching compositions to emphasize the pleasures and practicalities of cycling. Classic companies like Peugeot, Swift, and Humber celebrate the bicycle in these vintage posters.
