Balancing the Montmartre neighborhood’s spirited personality and grit, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s posters, advertisements, and paintings are seen as quintessential representations of 19th-century Parisian nightlife. Between cafés, cabarets, and other heavily trafficked venues, his portraits of the sorted citizens of Paris—from sex workers to aristocrats—characterize the atmosphere of his time, including the radically shifting gender and class relations. The advent of modern printmaking allowed Toulouse-Lautrec to share his legendary work widely and on a physical scale that the world had never seen. He once famously decreed, “The poster, that’s all there is!”
