Tom Cruise stars in this sci-fi action thriller directed by Steven Spielberg. Ray Ferrier (Cruise) is looking after his two children - teenager Robbie (Justin Chatwin) and precocious ten-year-old Rachel (Dakota Fanning) - while his ex-wife Mary (Miranda Otto) visits Boston for the weekend. After violent electrical storms start occurring across the world, Ray witnesses a huge armoured machine break out of the ground and start laying waste to everything in its path. Fleeing New Jersey with his children, Ray begins a dangerous journey through an America gripped by panic as the alien war machines start to wipe out mankind. While the hot-headed Robbie soon leaves, determined to join the fight back against the invaders, Ray is desperate to reunite Rachel with her mother.
